Let a professional advise you on what is best for your particular application.

The Flake Floor System Process

1. Prepared Substrate: Concrete must be Clean, Profiled, Sound, and Cured. It is always recommended that a moisture test be performed. In most cases Grinding or shot blasting the concrete is necessary for the coating to adhere to the concrete. Vacuum and clean the concrete thoroughly to remove any dust or contaminants. Mask off areas to be protected.

2. Optional Base Coat: This primer coat is usually applied due to environmental conditions. Please consult your contractor for complete details.

3. Solid Color Recieve Coat: This is the Coating that will receive the Flake broadcast. This coat should be pigmented to match one of the flake colors. There are many options for this coating depending on the application requirements. Some of the most popular coatings are water-based epoxy, 100% solids epoxy, polyaspartic, polyurea. Apply when air and surface temperatures are between 50°F and 90°F with relative humidity below 85% and will stay within that range until the product cures. Spread the product with a Magic Trowel or a foam squeegee to achieve a coverage rate. Backroll using a 3/8” roller cover.

4. 100% Broadcast Flakes: Broadcast decorative flakes into wet Recieve Coat to rejection. Inspect coverage during application to ensure that no wet and shiny coating is visible. Allow curing before proceeding. Vacuum and clean up any unadhered flakes.

5. Top Coat: There are many clear coat options depending on the application requirements. The most common top coats would be Plyaspartic, WB Polyurethane, SM Polyurethane, and 100% Clear epoxy. If applying a single coat of 90% polyaspartic, dip and roll product onto the floor, backroll coating using a 3/8” nap roller cover. Allow product time to cure. (depending on the selected topcoat)

One Day Flake Flooring System Option:

A One Day flake floor coating system is a combination of colored decorative vinyl flakes (or “chips”) cast into pigmented polyaspartics or Polyurea and fused together during application into a seamless surface, with a clear top-coat finish of polyaspartic.

Flake Floor Blends - Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ)

How far will 1/4" flakes go?

In most cases, a full coverage flake floor system requires 6-8 pounds of flakes per square foot.  So if you have a floor that is 300SF then you would need approximately  42-50 lbs. of flakes.

When applying flakes at a partial coverage rate, this can vary from 25-275 SF/LB

How many pounds are flake blends?

Custom flake blends are sold in 25-pound increments

What are your flakes made out of and are they UV Stable?

Our custom flake blends are made out of vinyl and are UV stable when top coated with a UV stable sealer.

Are all of the flakes in the blend 1/4"

No. When transporting, some of the flakes may get "crushed" making them smaller. This is not uncommon. We take every precaution to make sure that most of the flakes are not damaged in transit. 80-95% of our flake blends will be 1/4".

What is the price of your flake blends?

Because Turning Point Supply purchases flooring flakes in bulk, we can offer our contractors discounted pricing depending on the quantities needed. Please call one of our store locations for volume discounts.

Will hot tire pick-up the flake flooring coating?

NO. When proper profiling of the sub straight and products are applied properly, this will help against hot tires picking up the flake floor coating.

Is this a garage flake floor DIY kit?

No. This is not the kit you buy at your local big-box store. These are professional use only products that create a chemical bond to your concrete thus helping to elimanating tire marks, pealing, and other imperfections the DIY kits will cause. When our system is installed by a professional installer, these flake floors can last a lifetime with proper maintenance and care.
